Under direction of its faculty members, the Cornea and External Disease program offers a one-year fellowship in the study of diseases of the cornea, external eye, and anterior segment. In addition, experience in difficult contact lens fitting and refractive surgery will be provided. Each faculty member has an area of specific interest which creates a strong foundation for broadly based clinical and surgical training. Our fellow will be well prepared for a career in either academic or private practice.
Research: Faculty are actively engaged in research in the department and may collaborate with the fellow on projects of mutual interest.
Fellowship responsibilities:
1. Assist in care of cornea/external disease/contact lens/refractive patients in faculty practice through clinical and surgical interaction
2. Be a provider for VA generated cornea referrals with an independent VA cornea clinic one half day per week
3.Assist in supervision and education of ophthalmology residents with special attention to inpatient consults and emergency/urgent care clinics
Clinical Experience: Over 200 patients per week are seen who are either referred as new patients or followed in the cornea and external disease clinics. In addition, a large volume of corneal and anterior segment surgery is performed at this institution. An outstanding experience in the treatment of all types of corneal infections will be gained. Experience in contact lens fitting and refractive surgery will also be provided.
