Welcome to the home of the Department of Ophthalmology. Our department uses a multidisciplinary approach when caring for the eye problems of our patients. We offer a full range of ophthalmic services including expertise in cornea and external disease, cataracts, eye infections, glaucoma, vitreo-retinal disease, pediatrics and strabismus, neuro-ophthalmology, oculo-plastics, contact lenses and comprehensive ophthalmology. The department also is involved in glaucoma, neuro-ophthalmology
and vitreoretinal clinical trials, all of which ultimately lead to improvement of patient care. Our faculty lecture extensively and are recognized both nationally and internationally for their dedication to patient care.

The Department of Ophthalmology’s research concentrates on gene transfer therapy for retinal and macular degenerations as well as proliferative diabetic retinopathy.  Additional areas of research include the development of effective gene therapies for the treatment of optic nerve disorders, glaucoma, and herpes simplex virus infections.  The department is also involved in studying the process of phototransduction (conversion of light into brain signals or vision), as well as wound healing.

Please visit the services offered by our department and the UF Eye Specialties at the Shands Medical Plaza, and Hampton Oaks Medical Plaza our clinical arms. If our website doesn't answer your questions about our department, clinic services, research programs or personnel, please contact us via the mechanisms provided on the individual pages describing our services. Thank you for visiting!

Sincerely,

William Driebe, M.D.
Professor and Chair
